Feeling Down? Here are 3 Tips for Coping with Depression

This week on The Wellness Crossing I’m sharing my journey with depression. You know, because it’s just too fun NOT to share. 😉

But really, I am sharing because I know I’m not alone. And though I’ve been seeing strong strides of healing this year, I recently have had this dark cloud of “meh” come on the scene once again.

In the beginning, when depression would come I’d feel shame. Embarassment. My frustration would jump on the karaoke mike in my mind to sing five choruses of WHY CAN’T I JUST FEEL NORMAL?

And all of those feels? They left me in a spiral of fear and doubt that things could ever be better.

Flash forward to this year and I’m grateful for the tools I’ve learned that help me cope with the waves of depression when they come. And honestly, many times reaching for these things change the trajectory of my feelings.

They help me take back the reigns of my day when so often before I’d end up derailed.

So today I’m unpacking three of the tools I reach for in the hopes that they might help someone else out there, too. Or perhaps inspire your own version of self-care practices to help you take better care of yourself, too.

Because you deserve it. And you’re not alone.

I don't think I used to ever give a second thought to how I responded to fear. Sometimes I was strong and pushed through despite the thick cloud fear brought. But others, I would curl up, completely crippled by the weight of the fear. Today I'm talking about 3 ways I've been changing my relationship with fear. Because I believe you can, too! 3 Ways I’m Changing My Relationship with Fear

When I was about four years old I was playing in my Grandma’s closet one day when my younger brother shut the door on me. I remember how quickly my young little mind translated the door being shut as I’M LIVING HERE FOREVER.

I didn’t, of course, live in that closet longer than a mere 10 minutes. But in the moment I was gripped with fear that what was really just a funny little adventure for my brother meant something far more drastic.

For years after, the idea of being enclosed in a small space terrified me. And I wouldn’t dream of stepping inside a closet because my little mind believed the door would always close. All because it had happened…you know, that one time.

And while I’d love to laugh this off with an “I’ve grown past this”, which holds truth, there’s more to the story. Because can still find my relationship with fear to be as consuming as it was that day in my childhood closet.

So today I’m coming out of the closet (see what I did there?) and sharing some of the ways I’ve been intentionally changing my relationship with fear. Because at the end of the day, why would we ever want to live a life ruled by fear?

And yet it happens. To most of us. Just tell me if any of this sounds familiar to you, too…

We hesitate to move, we resist change, decide against that bold step out into the unknown all because the F-word grips us with it’s manipulative whispers.

“You aren’t strong enough.”

“You aren’t talented enough.”

“You’ll do it WRONG.”

“People won’t want to hear what you have to say.”

Sometimes the whispers are born out of an experience we’ve had that leads us to believe THAT EVERY SIMILAR CIRCUMSTANCE WILL BE THE SAME. If I got hurt once trying this, why the hell would I do it again? If I couldn’t do it three years ago, why would I trust I could do it today?

In other moments we find ourselves justifying our way out of something because we believe the fear is there as some sort of indication that danger lies ahead. Our primal instinct, instead of questioned, is responded to with fight or flight. But fear told us to. So it’s okay, right?

But the beautiful truth I’m hoping to share with you and me is this: we can CHANGE our RELATIONSHIP with FEAR.

We can take the reigns back, release the haze of the fear clouds, and embrace truth. And today I’m gonna tell you about 3 REAL ways I’m shifting my conversation with fear. Because I believe it can help you, too!

Have you ever tried Reiki before? I recently had my first session and I'm talking with my Reiki healer today on the podcast! Tune in to hear Melani Schweder's healing story and how Reiki plays a role in her overall wellness.

Reiki: Pursuing Wellness of Body, Mind & Spirit

When you think of “wellness”, what first comes to mind?

Is it the food you eat? A practice of self care? Taking vitamins?

I know there was a time when wellness to me simply meant feeling healthy. I didn’t think much about what I ate, how I intentionally cared for my body, or the type of exercise I did. And I certainly didn’t think much about the role my emotional or spiritual health played into my overall wellness.

Well, let’s get one thing right: much has changed for me in this department.

I fully believe that the well being of my emotions, spirit, mind and body ALL play their part in my wellness. In helping me be the best version of me there is.

And on my personal exploration and discovery of what wellness truly means to me, I’ve opened my eyes and heart to a variety or healing modalities. From drastic diet changes that honor my specific needs to making intentional time for rest. I’ve experimented with exercise appropriate for my body and neuroplasticity practices for supporting brain health.

But more recently, I had my very first experience with Reiki energy healing. Reiki is something I had heard about and considered exploring for some time but kept putting it off. It’s a Japanese healing technique that was developed in in the 1920s. It’s a natural approach to healing on a spiritual, emotional and physical level and the more I read about it the more fascinated I became.

So I scheduled my first appointment for a distance Reiki session with Melani Schweder and had such a great first experience I scheduled a second. Today she’s joining me on the podcast to talk about her own healing journey, how Reiki has played a role in her wellness and how we can pursue wellness of body, mind & spirit.
